Use this guide to answer some of your questions prior to class. If you can't find your answers here, please feel free to give us a call or contact us.

What can I expect from my first class?

On your first day at Kung Fu class, you will learn the ten warm ups and the basic exercises: basic blocking and punching, the stances, and the basic kicks. Each class begins with warm ups and the basics for conditioning. Students then progress through new and exciting techniques and forms, providing you with the perfect personal practice routine.

Do:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring a second pair of non-marking sole shoes (or barefoot)
  • Bring plenty of good water in a water bottle with a lid
  • Let your instructor know of any physical ailments you have, no matter how small!
  • Bring a determined attitude! Your first class will be a challenge, but it will get easier!
  • Stretch after class, either on your own or with friends
  • Listen to the instructor and follow along as best you can
  • When you received corrections, it is for your own safety and progression. Don't take them personally!

What is the difference between Family Kung Fu and the Adult class?

In the kid’s class we use games such as obstacle course or relays to make Kung Fu a more playful experience. In the adult class we focus more on physical conditioning, forms, self defense and sparring.

Can you start Kung Fu at any age?

Yes! Contrary to popular belief, you can start Kung Fu at any age. In fact, one of the most advanced students at Body Balance began Kung Fu in his late thirties. Today, he is a gold medalist and an assistant teacher.

Do you learn sparring?

Yes, once you have achieved the required level of proficiency and control, you learn to apply your techniques in simulated real life situations, such as partner work and sparring. This helps the techniques you learn in class to become natural reactions.

What kind of health benefits can I expect from Kung Fu?

Kung Fu will help you to achieve cardiovascular skills, muscle tone, flexibility, weight loss, and enhance focus and concentration. Practicing Kung Fu increases self confidence and provides you with the self defense skills necessary to protect yourself and others.

Is Kung Fu a good workout?

Most students describe Kung Fu as the optimal workout. Starting each class with the ten warm ups and stretching ensures that there are no injuries while increasing flexibility. Moving from stretches into a routine which is designed to balance strength and mobility with cardiovascular development prepares you for the upcoming forms and self defense exercises. Kung Fu is a fast paced movement oriented martial art so you are sure to get an excellent workout!
